John Glenn High School recently held an election for Student Body President and Vice President. Drew Baker and Lorene Kelly ran for president, and Keegan Huston and Rachel Dettra ran for vice president. Baker and Dettra campaigned together and Kelly and Huston ran together. Before the election, both sides began campaigning strategies.
Both created an Instagram page, posting pictures with captions that sometimes related with what they hoped to change. Both sides also handed out candy to students. On the candy wrappers were notes with their names. Kelly and Huston even made buttons with their names that many students were seen wearing at school. This year, those running were given an opportunity to share their past experiences and future endeavors during lunch.
The election appeared to be close. Many students struggled with deciding who should be president and vice president of the student body. On Thursday, May 13, students voted for who they hoped to be leading them next year. After votes were counted, on Tuesday, May 18 the results were announced at the beginning of the day. Kelly was elected president and Huston was elected vice president.
Kelly spoke about involving the students outside of Student Council more and letting the student body know what exactly is going on and know what decisions are being made.
Kelly believes, “Student Council should be a place to share the diverse voices of the body. It should act as a center that is always trying to improve things.”
Kelly and Huston incorporated new campaigning styles such as utilizing social media to get their name out and known to the student body. The two hope to have inspired others who wish to follow in their path with their campaign and are excited for what next year holds.
