In the dictionary, if the word team had a picture beside it, what would it be? According to principal Steve Brooks and varsity basketball coach Greg Woodard, the picture would be of Roger Bates.
Bates has been involved at John Glenn for many years and is very well known in the little community of New Concord. He has been involved as a custodian, volunteer, and chaperone for school trips. Bates involvement in the football and basketball programs has increased overtime, and he also helps with music activities and carries on a prideful tradition: the TEAM cheer.
Rogers loyalty to and respect for our school is one of many great attributes he brings, said Greg Woodard, coach of the boys basketball team of which Bates is manager.
Not only is Roger involved in the athletics program, but he is just a part of the school itself. Roger Bates is John Glenn, said principal Steve Brooks.
There are many things Roger loves about JGHS. The community of John Glenn sees this when he stands up and gets an entire stadium to scream TE-AM. Roger is now starting to spread his spirit on the girls side of the basketball floor by accompanying them to their tournament play.
Roger doesnt just influence the people at JGHS, but they also influence him. The things that influence him most are the people faculty, staff, students, parents, and the people of the community supporting the schools through levy campaigns, booster groups and planning meetings for renovations, said Bates.
Bates spends a lot of his free time at JGHS. Whether its on weekends or weeknights, he is always there. Roger dedicates so much of his time to this school. Whether its cleaning up the locker room, or fixing up equipment, Roger always gets the job done, said Brooks.
Roger philosophy of life mirrors Brooks statement, Whatever a person does in life, always try to do your best. As the saying goes, people dont care how much you know rather how much you care. When you put forth the effort to do your best, you get positive results.
