NEW CONCORD -- The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds will open its 17th season with a concert titled "Seventeen Come Sunday," on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. in Brown Chapel on the campus of Muskingum University.
The 2009-2010 season is dedicated to the memory of Dr. William F. Schlacks, the group's founder and conductor, who died on Aug. 23.
Tickets, $7 for adults, $5 for school age students and free for children age 5 and under, are available at the door prior to the performance. Season tickets are available by calling 826-8034.
Conductor for the performance will be Dr. Margaret Underwood, director of band, wind and percussion activities at Otterbein College. The narrator will be Dr. Russell Brown.
Musical selections will include "Folk Song Suite," by R. Vaughn Williams; "O Magnum Mysterium," arranged by Morten Lauridsen and performed in memory of Dr. Schlacks; and "Variations on 'America,'" by Charles Ives.
The second half of the performance will begin with "The Good Soldier Schweik Suite," from the opera of the same name by Robert Kurka, and will feature a smaller chamber group from the MVSW. The concert will continue with "Chester," by William Billings and William Schuman.
The performance will close with a performance of "The Lake," composed by Dr. Schlacks in 2004.
Performances of the MVSW are supported in part by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency that supports public programs in the arts.
