Published:

Rick Bates, l, and Sam Bates, r, son and husband, respectively, of the late East Muskingum teacher, Sue Bates, pause for a photo with Gail Bell and Doug Joy, the 2010 recipients of the Sue Bates Inviting Teacher Award. The award is presented each spring at the East Muskingum School Recognition Breakfast to honor and recognize the teacher or teachers who exemplifies the traits of Mrs. Bates. She had a zest for life, a positive outlook even in adversity, a constant caring for others and an accepting attitude toward everyone. Mrs. Bates was with the district for 22 years as a seventh grade language arts teacher and as the middle school librarian. Her cookie jar at the circulation desk immortalized her as the "cookie lady". Since the award was established in her memory by her family, 15 teachers have received this award.
