ZANESVILLE — A Coshocton man was killed Thursday when the motorcycle he was operating on Route 16 struck a garden tractor crossing the road near the Muskingum-Coshocton county line.

Russell J. Hammond, 48, was pronounced dead at Genesis-Good Samaritan in Zanesville where he was flown from the scene by MedFlight following the crash at approximately 1:59 p.m.

Three passengers with Hammond on the motorcycle equipped with a sidecar were also transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Coshocton EMS crews.

An unidentified 7-year-old girl was transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus for evaluation. A patrol sergeant said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The operator of the garden tractor, George N. Holland, 73, of Conesville, was flown by MedFlight to Grant Medical Center in Columbus with serious injuries.

According to a nursing supervisor, Holland remained in “critical” condition Friday morning.

According to a patrol report, Holland was attempting to cross Route 16 from Township Road 481 to County Road 296 when he was struck by a 1984 Harley Davidson operated by Hammond.

The 7-year-old boy was reportedly a passenger on the Harley-Davidson along with Russell Hammond, while Audra Hammond and the 4-year-old boy were riding in the sidecar.

No additional information regarding the accident was available as of press time.

The crash remained under investigation by the patrol’s Zanesville post.
