NEW CONCORD - Bath salts and synthetic marijuana will be added to the list of substances prohibited in the village.

Village Council, acting on an emergency basis, unanimously adopted an ordinance amending the general offenses code to include those substances among those prohibited for use or possession in the village.

The county has been having a lot of trouble with bath salts, Police Chief Ed Stewart said.

Possession of either bath salts or synthetic marijuana would be a minor misdemeanor, Stewart said.

In another ordinance related matter, village officials reported that a public hearing about excessive noise proved to be a productive meeting.

Councilman Brett Essex, chairman of the safety committee, said all parties privy to the issue were both forthcoming and constructive in stating their views.

Dialog with incoming students, perhaps as early as freshmen orientation, might preclude later misunderstandings, Councilman Robert Dickson said.

Mayor Greg Adams agreed.

Maybe we can be more proactive in the first couple of weeks of a new school year and make our police presence known, Adams said.

Essex believes maintaining a line of communication and understanding must be a continuous process.
