Lady Muskies split twinbill

NEW CONCORD Muskingum Universitys softball team continued to play .500 ball, splitting a home doubleheader with Heidelberg University on Friday.

Heidelberg won a 19-18 slugfest in the first game before Muskingum rebounded to take game two by an 11-9 count.

The split leaves Muskingum with a 13-13 overall record (2-4 in the OAC) while Heidelberg is now 12-10 overall (2-3 in the OAC).

In game one, it was an offensive onslaught for both sides, with the teams combining for 36 runs and 36 hits and each scoring three or more runs sin four separate innings.

Bessie Artino did the most damage for Heidelberg as she collected a home run, double, single and eight RBI. Other hit leaders for the visitors included Jami Wagner with three singles and two RBI; Erica Huffman with three singles and one RBI; Lexi Pinkelman with a home run, single and two RBI; Kelly Martz with a double, single and an RBI; and Julie Okorn and Melissa Lovatie with two singles each.

For the Lady Muskies, Apryl Paterson enjoyed a four-hit game with two RBI; Aly Mazzi collected a double, two singles and four RBI; Ashley Price cracked a double and single and drove in four; Hannah Reese had a double and single; and Courtney Moyer and Jaclynn Hess each had two singles.

Four pitchers hit the circle for each side, with Heidelbergs quartet combining for four strikeouts and seven walks while the Muskingum foursome had four Ks and six walks, with Ashley Price (5-3) saddled with the loss.

In game two, Patterson again had four hits to lead the 16-hit attack, collecting three RBI in the process. Jendy Weppler contributed a triple, single and three RBI; Kallie Coy lined three singles and drove in a run; Moyer had a double, single and two RBI; and Reese and Conley each had two hits.

For Heidleberg, Piknelman again starred at the plate with a homer, single and four RBI. Wagner collected a triple and single and Artino had a double, single and an RBI.

Muskingum starter Rachel Bannister (1-1) got the pitching win with sixth inning relief help from Ashley Gilbert. The duo combined for two strikeouts and two walks.

NEXT Muskingum visits Marietta College for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
