Muskies baseball team take two at home

NEW CONCORD — With a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Wilmington Quakers on Tuesday, the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies improved to 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Muskingum claimed game one by a 11-2 score and completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the second game.

In the opener, Colten Maxwell improved to 3-1 on the mound, with relief help from Logan Addison and Joe Jenkins. The trio combined to strike out five and walk just one. Jake Hofer (1-1) took the loss for Wilmington with help from Brandon Compton. The two fanned one and walked five.

Colton Newell slammed a home run and single to lead the 14-hit Muskingum attack. Darren Garrett added a triple, double and two singles; Alex Vaccaro a double and two singles and Dirk Malone had a pair of singles.

The three Muskingum pitchers allowed just four Wilmington hits with Austin Newman and Brett McEvoy each ripping a double to lead the way.

In the nightcap, Alex VanDine struck out 10 batters in the first seven innings as the hosts built a 4-1 lead, then Logan Addison came on to finish it off by adding two more strikeouts. The Quakers utilized three pitchers, with starter Jake Vinkovich taking the loss. Luke Teeters came on in the sixth and Troy Wagner pitched the eighth frame with the three combining to strike out one and walk four.

Newell again had the big stick for the Muskies (9-10, 3-1 OAC), cracking another round-tripper and two singles while Garrett tacked on a double and single, Vaccaro had another double and Matt Connor chipped in a pair of singles.

Newman again doubled for Wilmington (3-14, 0-4 OAC) and Xavier Jordan added two singles.

NEXT—Muskingum entertains Ohio Wesleyan University today at 4 p.m.
