NEW CONCORD — After spotting the visiting Ohio Wesleyan Lady Battling Bishops a 25-21 win in the opening set, the Muskingum University Fighting Lady Muskies rattled off three straight wins by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20 to post a 3-1 win and improve to the best start in a number of years at 5-0.
A pair of freshmen setters, Kaleigh Hendrix and Emily Francis dished out 24 assists each to lead the Muskingum attack, while Hendrix and junior outside hitter Alexa Abrams (Buckeye Trail) each had a pair of service aces.
At the net sophomore hitter Brooke Scott led the way with 17 kills, a solo block and two block assists. Abrams and freshman Katie Hunt followed with 11 stops each with Hunt adding a duo of solo blocks as well as two block assists and Abrams had one block assist.
On defense, Abrams paced Muskingum with 27 digs followed by senior libero Kim Seitter with 19. Senior outside hitter Hanna Rose tacked on 13 digs , while Heather Smith added 12 and Hendrix seven.
Ohio Wesleyan (3-1) was paced in net play by Tamra Londot with 12 kills, with Meigan Day adding 10, Katie Fain nine and Rylee Komminsk eight stops. Londot also had a solo block and two assists, Day had three block assists and Kelli Venable added a pair of block assists.
Setter Shannon Schlater handed out 40 assists for the Lady Bishops. On defense, Ohio Wesleyan was paced by Danielle Birney with 26 digs with Fain adding 13. Emily Stewart and Schlater each contributed 11 digs and Bridget Haag chipped in with seven.
NEXT — Muskingum goes on the road Saturday at the Rose Hulman Tournament to face Kenyon College at 4 p.m. and Defiance College at 6 p.m.
