TEN YEARS AGO - 1999

Histories of several industries in Newcomerstown compiled and submitted to Newcomerstown Public Library, coordinated by John S. Heller. The histories included Heller Brothers Tool Co. (Simonds), Clow's, W.M. Brode Co., Tastee Apple, Accurate Products, Groovfold, and 3-D Diamond Inc. (formerly Herco).

Stone Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. celebrating 50th anniversary; Dale Swaldo was fire chief.

Barn on the John and Mary Edith Powell farm at Rts. 93 and 36, near West Lafayette, was being painted with Ohio's Bicentennial logo as Ohio prepared to celebrate its 200th birthday in 2003.

Deaths: Edna Ressler, 75; Donald Gavin Meckley, 63; Bernard A. Bantum, 77.

TWENTY YEARS AGO - 1989

Ohio State University golfer, Doug Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Davis, West Lafayette, qualified for 89th Ohio Amateur in Dayton.

NHS students Julie Riffle, Jamey Lower and Jennifer Bates attended Ohio American Legion Auxiliary's 43rd Buckeye Girls State.

The Times-Reporter 12th East-West Charity All-Star football game set for July 21 at New Philadelphia Quaker Stadium. West team included Jim Conner, Brian Parks and Chris Styer of Newcomerstown and Mike Dickerson, Bill and Jim Eldridge, Joe Guinther and Jeff Hostetler of Ridgewood. Indian Valley's Eric Hykes, Brian Ridgeway and Brent Peeper were on East team.

AARP (American Assn. of Retired Persons) organized in Newcomerstown; Celia Hennis, president.

Port Washington-Salem Historical Society working on exterior of Town Hall in Port Washington.

THIRTY YEARS AGO - 1979

Gasoline shortage affects local area - numerous stations posted "out of gas" signs on pumps.

Internationally known New York fashion designer, Shannon Rodgers, native of Newcomerstown, presented Golden Rose Award as "Honored Ohioan" at Schoenbrunn Amphitheatre, New Philadelphia.

Gwen Hoffman, 16, Newcomerstown, crowned Tuscarawas County 4-H Queen.

Stone Creek School's 45th annual alumni reunion attended by 210 at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High, New Philadelphia. Mary Jane John led program, "Roots."

Simonds Cutting Tools retirees Geraldine Ford, Carl Phillips and Chester Tyson honored at dinner.

Revitalization project for downtown Newcomerstown under study.

Record low temperatures recorded locally as July 4 reading of 45 degrees broke the previous 48 degrees recorded in 1963.
