Have you ever needed to do research, use the Internet, or just want a really good book to read? Then your local Muskingum Library System is for you. Did you know that the state has drastically cut funding to all the libraries across the state of Ohio? Because of these funding cuts, the Muskingum County library has put a $ one million levy on the Nov. 3 ballot. The library offers many services to everyone in our communities. The local library offers everything from Internet access, books, DVDs, music cd's, and magazines to classes, story time, summer reading programs and exhibits. JGHS students use the local library. "It gives me a time to clear my mind and gives me a good place to pick out a good book," said freshman Lauren Dolick. The poor economy has forced more people to use the services offered at their local library. Each year, over 55,000 card holders use the services of the Muskingum County libraries. This year from the months of January to August, over 582,000 materials were checked out and over 32,000 countless hours of computer time were logged by users in their local branches. In 2001, the state began making funding cutbacks. The state funding budget cuts have already forced the Muskingum County library system to close all its five branches on Saturdays. "I hate that the library is closed on Saturdays because that's really the only time I have to go during the school year," says freshman Rachael Dailey. Over 15 library workers have lost their jobs due to funding cut backs. Our local New Concord branch is now only open four days. This is the first time the library has had an operating levy on the ballot. The library needs your help on Nov. 3 by voting yes. If the library doesn't pass the levy on Nov. 3, the library branches will be forced to close. Many John Glenn students probably have no idea what will happen if the levy doesn't pass. Most students don't know what the levy is for and others didn't even know there was a levy on the ballet for the library. If you would like to get involved with helping people become aware of the library levy, come join me this Friday [Oct. 16] at 7 p.m. at the concession stands to help pass out flyers during the John Glenn football game.
