Kayla Rae Garner

NEW CONCORD -- Kayla Rae Garner, 15, passed away at 11:10 p.m. Friday (Dec. 25, 2009) at Genesis Hospice, Morrison House, surrounded by family and friends.

Kayla was born Sept. 3, 1994, in Zanesville, a daughter of Amy S. Burkhart Garner of Zanesville and Conrad D. Garner of Norwich.

Kayla attended Starlight School for 14-plus years where she learned so many things. Kayla was a member of the Zanesville Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, Special Needs Friendship Club, Special Riders and Miracle League.

Kayla was preceded in death by her grandfather, Glen A. Burkhart; and a special friend of her grandmother Burkhart, Dale Yontz.

Surviving Kayla are her mom and dad; grandmother, Gertrude E. Burkhart; grandparents, Joe and Margaret (Peg) Garner; great-grandmother, Virginia Crum; aunts and uncles, David and Lisa Burkhart, Andrea Garner, Kathy Boetcher, John and Heather Garner; Kayla's cousins, Ryan and Cory Burkhart and Jack and Evan Garner; and her special caregivers, Martha Smith and Wayne Muse.

Kayla was able to enjoy a special night Dec. 18 at McDonald's which was hosted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. There, she was able to enjoy her favorite foods and be with family and friends one last time. It was very special for everyone.

Calling hours were Dec. 29, 2009, at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 W. Main St., New Concord. A Rosary service was also Dec. 29 at the funeral home with Father Robert Borer officiating.

Funeral services were Dec. 30 at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Sullivan officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, south of New Concord.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Starlight School; Nationwide Children's Hospital; Zanesville Christian Missionary and Alliance Church; or to Genesis Hospice, Morrison House.
