Kenyon defeats Lady Muskies

GAMBIER -- Capitalizing on a big second half, the host Kenyon College Ladies rolled to a 77-59 non-conference win over the visiting Muskingum University Lady Fighting Muskies Saturday.

Following a close first half, Kenyon outscored Muskingum 45-30 the second frame to claim the win going away.

Neither team could take control in the first 20 minutes with the score knotted four times and the biggest lead of the round was a six-point advantage by the Ladies, once at the 13:23 mark and again with 1:51 to go in the frame.

Freshman guard Taryn Payton (Cambridge) converted a pair of free throws and Carissa Bosch hit the second of a two-shot foul to pull Muskingum within three points (32-29) heading to the locker room at the break.

The early going of the second half was also nip-n-tuck with the score tied at 38.

Kenyon built a seven-point edge (54-47) with 8:39 remaining before Payton again used the free throw line to get the Lady Muskies within five with 8:26 showing.

Kenyon (8-3) then reeled off seven unanswered points to boost the lead to 12 at the 7:08 mark and the Lady Muskies couldn't get the difference under double figures again over the distance as the Ladies built the lead to 16 with 3:23 left and coasted to the 77-59 victory.

The big difference came on shots from the field as Muskingum hit 20-of-56 for 35.7 percent, while Kenyon connected on 30-of-67 for 44.8 percent. Muskingum added 16-of-29 from the foul line and the Ladies converted 14-of-16 charity tosses.

Muskingum (6-6) was led in scoring and rebounding by Amanda Dobbins with 19 points and eight boards to go with three assists. Suzanne Nichols added 10 points, Bosch chipped in nine points, Payton finished with eight markers and Traci Alt (Buckeye Trail) had six points, three assists and three steals.

Morgan Korinek paced five Kenyon players in double digits with 16 points, while Katie Adlam and Kathleen Williams each tallied 12. Laurel Stokes and Kayla Ernst each chipped in 10 points and Kat Powers added seven.

Kenyon recorded a 51-31 rebounding advantage led by Korinek with seven, while Williams and Sam Reichenbach each added six boards.
