Irene H. Ross

NEW CONCORD — Irene H. Ross, 100, of New Concord, died at 3:10 p.m. on Sunday (May 23, 2010) at The Beckett House, New Concord.


She was born Jan. 23, 1910, in Guernsey County,  daughter of the late Charles Ross and Emma Jordan Huff.  

Mrs. Ross was a 1960 graduate of Muskingum College and taught elementary school in Muskingum County and with the Cambridge City Schools for more than 25 years, having retired from Garfield School.  

She was an 80 year member of Bloomfield Presbyterian Church, where she became the first woman elder. She also taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for many years and was active in the Mother Collins Missionary Society. She was also a member of the New  Concord Garden Club, the Women's Forum, and the Guernsey County Retired Teachers.

She attributed her longevity to hard work, strong faith, helping others, and a good sense of humor.  

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Ann (Roger) Pattison, Janice  Irene (John) Mathers, and Linda Lou Hamilton; son, Harper Dwayne (Joan) Ross; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Her husband, Harper Ross, died March 9, 1954. Also deceased are sisters, Garnet DeVore, Grace Conrad, and Clarice Murgatroyd; and brothers, Wayne Huff and Charles Huff.

Funeral services were May 27 at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 W. Main St., New Concord. Pastor Jim Gibson officiated.

Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
