NEWCOMERSTOWN — The Rev. H. Dean McElroy, 84, of West Lafayette, went to be with the Lord on Monday (July 12, 2010.) He died at Lafayette Point Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born Thursday, April 8, 1926 in Steubenville, to the late Harry C. McElroy and Margaret (Merryman) McElroy.
He served in the Navy during World War II. When returning, he married his wife, Ruth (Lenarz) on Sept. 17, 1952. Dean received his calling and attended Asbury College where he received his doctorate in ministry. He served many churches and touched many lives during his 48 years in the ministry and finally retried in 2003. He enjoyed spending time with his family and gardening. He was a member of East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Along with his wife of 57 years, Dean is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Terrell of West Lafayette, Carolyn (Larry) Barr of New Concord, and Janie (Mike) Layton of West Lafayette; five grandchildren, Michael (Penny) Williams, Tiffany Layton, Sean (Laura) Bordenkircher, Craig (Kendra) Bordenkircher, and Courtney Layton; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Williams and Teagan Bordenkircher; two brothers, James (Marge) McElroy and Darrell (Harriet) McElroy all of Wintersville; three sisters-in-law, Norma Miller of New Philadelphia, Barbara Booth of Victoria, Texas, Bernie Slaven of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by an older brother, Donald McElroy.
Funeral services were July 16 at the West Lafayette Lafayette United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sue Chidley officiating.
Burial was in the Fairfield Cemetery. Military service was conducted by Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard.
The Addy Funeral Home in Newcomerstown was in charge of arrangements.
