NEW CONCORD — Shirley Jayne Hixson, 81, of Norwich, died March 27, 2011, at her home.
She was born Feb. 21, 1930, daughter of the late Clarence and DeBritto Martin Hindall.
Mrs. Hixson received a Bachelors in Music from Ohio Northern University and a Masters of Music Education, emphasis in percussion, from The Ohio State University.
She retired from Maysville Local School after 13 years of teaching music education, and as an adjunct professor of percussion at Muskingum College. Shirley had a very decorated career in the performing arts having played concert piano. She was also an outstanding marimbist and published composer of the six mallet technique for marimba performance.
She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Zanesville Singers, Thursday Music Club, former board member of the Red Cross and YWCA, and a charter member of the East Muskingum Swimming Pool Association.
She is survived by her husband, Richard D. Hixson, whom she married in June 1956; daughter; Shawna Hixson of Buckeye Lake; sons, Todd (Kathy) Hixson of Zanesville and Scott (Melissa) Hixson of Murrell's Inlet, S.C.; three grandchildren; twins, Richard Daniel Hixson and Steven Edward Hixson, and newborn, Ethan Scott Hixson, born March 28, 2011, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, C.B. Hindall and George Regan Hindall.
Funeral services were April 2 at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 W. Main St., New Concord, with Andrew Hartsook officiating.
Burial followed in St. Paul's Cemetery, near Sonora.
