ZANESVILLE — Robert E. Hicks, 92, a lifelong resident of Muskingum County, passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital on July 25, 2013.
Born June 22, 1921, in Muskingum County, he was the son of Clifford and Frances (Mears) Hicks.
A 1940 graduate of New Concord High School, Robert worked at Ohio Bell Telephone Co. before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. Bob served in the Army’s 33rd Field Artillery Brigade throughout Europe finishing his military career as a Master Sergeant.
Mr. Hicks returned to Ohio Bell working over 36 years as Cable Repair Foreman most of his career throughout Central and Southeastern Ohio. Also, Bob developed and presented safety programs to the public for Ohio Bell designed to reduce the amount of cable damage and service interruptions.
Robert was a past member of the East Muskingum School Board and past President of the East Muskingum Baseball Club. In 1965, he helped organize the Perry Township Summer Baseball Club for youth, which still exists today.
Bob was a volunteer fireman and past President of the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department Club. Robert was a former member of the Perry Township Appeals Board. He was a Junior Achievement Advisor, former Boy Scout Troop 171 Scout Master and Troop Committeeman and a past President of Perry School PTA.
For several years during retirement Hicks was President of the Zanesville Pioneers, an Ohio Bell Telephone Co. charitable organization. Funds were raised and donated to help hearing impaired children.
Robert was a member of Central Trinity United Methodist Church, past Master Malta Masonic Lodge in Norwich, past President Zavi Shrine Club, past Patron Chapter #52 Eastern Star, a member of Aladdin Shrine in Columbus, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Cambridge and Columbus, Amaranth and White Shrine.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva; and son, Ronald (Vicki) of Zanesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Esther.
Calling hours were held Wednesday, July 31, as well as Masonic services at Bryan and Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave., Zanesville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at Bryan and Snider Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom England officiating.
Burial concluded in Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
