NEW CONCORD — Steven Lawrence “Larry” Gardner died peacefully at home July 29, 2013.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1951, in Takoma Park, Md.

He graduated from Glenelg High School in Glenelg, Md.

A resident of the Cambridge area since 1977, Larry got his surveying license in 1983 and went on to establish his own successful business here. An active member of the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio, he was currently secretary of the Ohio Valley Chapter.

Larry filled his life with music, playing mandolin in groups such as Almost Famous and the Tyler-Monroe Band. He also ran sound for many years at the Penny Royal Opera House in Fairview. He and his wife, Liza, were regulars at regional bluegrass festivals, where Larry would pick away into the wee hours with the many friends they made.

An extraordinarily talented man, he was known for the way he threw himself into his passions, from music to building his own house, to brewing his own beer.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Barney “Liza” Gardner; his parents, David and Nancy Gardner, of Terra Alta, W.Va.; and by three siblings, Charles, in Statesville, N.C., Kathleen, in Lusby, Md., and Richard in Perry, Fla.

Larry asked that there be no traditional services, but family and close friends will gather soon to celebrate a life well-lived.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Guernsey County, 9711 East Pike, Cambridge, OH 43725, or the Guernsey County Cancer Society, 927 East Wheeling Ave., Suite 205, Cambridge, OH 43725.
