NEW CONCORD -- Muskingum University football coach Al Logan announced that junior quarterback Jake Burns and senior wide receiver Dwight Sutton have been named co-offensive Most Valuable Players and sophomore linebacker Alex Thomas was named defensive Most Valuable Player for the 2009 season. Burns, who ranked third in the Ohio Athletic Conference in total offense per game (232.6) and fifth in passing yards per game (186.6), ended his stellar season ranked second all-time at Muskingum in career total offense (4,557) and ranked third all-time in career passing yards with 3,766. He set a new school mark for touchdown passes in a season with 14 and set the school record for total offense in a game with his 381 yard performance against Ohio Northern University. Sutton registered a team-high seven touchdown receptions, including his dramatic 32-yard game-winning catch as time expired against John Carroll University. He logged 25 grabs on the season for 496 yards. Sutton finished his tenure at Muskingum with 1,185 yards receiving, which ranks seventh all-time. Thomas led the Muskie hard-hitting defense with 89 tackles on the season. He ranked fifth in the OAC averaging 8.9 stops per game and ranked first in forced fumbles with two. Overall, Thomas notched 7.5 tackles for loss for 11 yards, intercepted one pass, recovered one fumble and recorded the Muskies' first safety since 2005 when he tackled Marietta College running back Lamar Hunter in the end zone en route to Muskingum's Homecoming game win against the Pioneers. Muskingum finished the year in fifth place in the rugged OAC, their best finish since the 2003 season. The Muskies ended the campaign as one of the hottest teams in the league winning four of their last six games.
