Lady Muskies, Zeps pick up big victories

NEW CONCORD -- John Glenn High's Lady Muskies put in some etra time Wednesday night, but in the end it was time well spent in a 46-43 double overtime victory over visiting Philo in a Muskingum Valley League match-up. "It was fun tonight," John Glenn coach Brian Fulks said. "We had a lot of people step up to get this win. Kathleen (Luburgh) and Breanna hit some huge free throws, Chelsie (Karling) hit the big shot that kept us going." Karling's big shot was a three-pointer at the end of the first overtime to tie the contest at 39-39 and extend the game to a second extra session. In the second overtime, Bradley sparked the Lady Muskies, connecting on a clutch 5-of-6 performance from the foul line as John Glenn outscored the Lady Electrics 7-4 to pick up the win. Senior Kelli Brock tallied 14 points to lead John Glenn (3-15, 3-11 MVL) while Bradley finished with 12 points and Karling added 11, including a trio of three-pointers. Philo (3-14, 1-13 MVL) was paced by Hope Roberts' 12 point night, with double figure support from Kaelani Gill with 10 points. NEXT -- John Glenn travels to MVL foe Maysville on Saturday, JV tip time of 6 p.m. Shenandoah 46, Frontier 36 SARAHSVILLE--Just in time for the looming Sectional tournament, Shenandoah High head coach Lynn Miley believes her basketball squad is coming together. It would certainly seem that way, as after beating Pioneer Valley Conference opponent Fort Frye Tuesday evening in the first game of a league gauntlet, the Lady Zeps (6-11, 4-8 PVC) notched another key victory against visiting Frontier Wednesday evening, 46-36. "I am starting to see Cali (Ginn) become more of a team leader, filling that void for us," Miley observed. "She is understanding when to push the ball from the point guard position, and when to hold up-- as a result, this team is gelling together." The Lady Zeps entered halftime tied at 16 with the Lady Cougars, but a 30-18 scoring advantage in the final frame fueled Shenandoah on to victory. Miranda Redden led the Shenandoah scoring attack with 16 points, while spearheading the defense with four steals. Ginn added 11 markers; Sami Schott secured a whopping 16 rebounds and scored nine points; and Nicole Sills tallied five counters. Frontier was led by Heather Booth with 15 points and nine boards, while Hillary Thatcher added six markers. Lexi Hoff pulled down eight caroms. The Lady Zeps put up a lot of shots, making 16-of-61 (26 percent) of their field goals, and rattling in 13-of-24 (54 percent) of their free throws. NEXT--Shenandoah travels to Monroe Central in another PVC matchup, with the J.V. tipoff slated for 6 p.m. Newcomerstown 67, Malvern 35 NEWCOMERSTOWN --Coming out of the gates with a hot start, the Newcomerstown High Lady Trojans routed Inter-Valley Conference foe Malvern at home Wednesday, 67-35. Newcomerstown (7-10, 6-8 IVC) blew the Lady Hornets out of the water in he first half, as they headed into the intermission with a commanding 41-17 lead. Five players scored for the Lady Trojans in the first quarter, featuring a pair of three-pointers from Allie Hinton. The second frame was even more prolific for Newcomerstown, as it racked up 22 more points using six-point performances from Chelsea Fenton and Steph Felton. The hosts outscored Malvern 26-18 in the final half to secure the much-needed victory. Field-goal percentage was in favor of the hosts, as they buried 26-of-54 (48 percent) of their shots from the floor. Fenton led four Lady Trojans scoring in double figures with 17 points while grabbing 10 of her team's 24 rebounds. Felton tacked on 13 points; Hinton pumped in 11; and Kori Conner 10. Malvern was led by Christina Mayle with 14 markers and Logan Smalley with 10. NEXT -- Newcomerstown will host Sandy Valley on Saturday, with a 6 p.m. reserve game tip-off.
