NEW CONCORD -- Nick Raymond scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies to a 2-1 win over the visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars Tuesday afternoon at Mose Morehead Field. Raymond led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Wes Carder (John Glenn) and then scored when Erik Spitzer singled to left to snap a tie at one and propel the Muskies to victory. Mount Vernon took the lead in the fifth with a solo run, but the Muskies came back to knot the score in the sixth keyed again by Raymond leading off with a single and Carder sacrificing him to second. Raymond then advanced to third on a single by catcher Brock Whiteman (John Glenn) and scored on a balk. The Cougars got a runner to second base in the ninth, but stranded him there as Josh Cornwell picked up a save getting the final two batters to fly out and go down swinging. Isaac Free was the Muskie starter and worked six frames striking out three. He was relieved by Jared Patterson in the seventh with Patterson (2-2) picking up the win striking out two and walking two. Cornwell then came on in the ninth to close it out. Grant Martin got the start for the Cougars fanning four and walking one in six innings, while Justin Brown (1-1) came on in the seventh and took the loss with one strikeout. Tyler Hardcastle (Zanesville-West Muskingum) paced a seven-hit attack by Muskingum (10-10) with a double, while Raymond and Whiteman each contributed a pair of singles. For Mount Vernon Nazarene (16-10), Jordan Doherty had three singles and Josh Roberts added a pair of singles. NEXT-- Muskingum visits Wittenberg on Thursday at 7 p.m.
