NEW CONCORD -- On a day when Muskingum University senior catcher Brock Whiteman established a new school hit record, the Muskies dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Ohio Northern University at Mose Morehead Field on Saturday, by scores of 7-3 in game one, followed by a 13-7 setback in the nightcap. Whiteman collected a double in game one and then belted a home run and single in game two, pushing his career total to 208 for a new Muskingum University hit record. In game one, Ohio Northern jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and was never challenged. Muskingum managed only a single run in the second frame and two in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Price (7-1) earned the mound victory for ONU, striking out six and walking one before giving way to Brett Katana for the final out. Muskingum's Michael Congrove (3-3) took the loss, walking one in three innings before Todd Spadaro came on to work the final four innings and post one strikeout. Loren Fleischman led ONU with two doubles and four RBI while Eric Yunker had a double and two singles. Katana chipped in two singles and Greg Gibbons had a double. For the Muskies, Tyler Hardcastle led the way with two doubles and two RBI while Garrett Frederici had three singles and an RBI. Colton Newell and Alex Vaccaro each chipped in two singles and Whiteman had a double. In game two, ONU bolted out to an early lead with a four-run first inning and added three more in the third frame to lead 7-4 en route to the twinbill sweep. Erik Spitzer stroked three doubles to lead the Muskies (17-15, 6-6 OAC), while Wes Carder (John Glenn) cracked a home run and single and had two RBI. Ohio Northern (21-9, 6-6 OAC) was led by Matt Hampshire with a double and three singles. Adam Yunker added three base hits and Gibbons collected a double and two singles. Muskingum starter Ben Skelley absorbed the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs, with one strikeout and one walk. NEXT-- Muskingum plays at Denison University on Monday at 6 p.m.
