NEW CONCORD — At the Muskingum University annual Athletic Department Awards Luncheon in the Recreation Center, a total of 17 student-athletes were recognized for their achievements both in the classroom and on the field.
Freshman softball outfielder Shana Snow (Warsaw/River View) and freshman track & field athlete Chase Addy (Newcomerstown) were presented with the William F. Lange Outstanding Freshmen Awards.
Snow has started 27 games for the Muskies and is batting .358 with 29 hits, 18 runs, nine RBIs, and two doubles. She has registered nine multiple hit games and has eight stolen bases.
Addy, an All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree, is a combined eight-time meet champion in the pole vault in the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. He was an All-Ohio indoor and outdoor qualifier and OAC indoor and outdoor championships qualifier.
Freshman women’s basketball post and softball infielder Ebony Taylor (Cleveland/Warrensville Hts.) and junior men’s soccer midfielder and men’s tennis athlete Adrian Matthews (Bluffton) were honored with the Ann White and Roy “Red” Turner Strive for Excellence Awards.
Taylor appeared in 16 games for the women’s basketball team and is a member of the softball squad.
Matthews, an Academic All-OAC honoree, is a three-year member of the soccer team. He has played in 28 games with one assist. On the court, Matthews in an OAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honoree and has 37 combined wins throughout his career in singles and doubles play.
Senior track and field athlete Kelley Crater (Butler, Pa.) was recognized as the Barbara Steiner Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, while senior baseball catcher Brock Whiteman (New Concord/John Glenn) was acknowledged as the William G. Moore Outstanding Senior Male Athlete. In addition, Crater and Whiteman were also honored with the OAC Clyde Lamb Award. Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.
Crater, a former Muskingum school record-holder in the javelin, is a two-time OAC Championships qualifier and meet champion of the 2010 Muskingum-Walsh University dual and the 2009 Kenyon College Invitational. Crater finished second at both the 2010 Muskingum Amy Adams Memorial Invitational and the 2010 Ohio Wesleyan University Marv Frye Invitational and placed third at the 2009 All-Ohio Championships
Whiteman, the all-time career hits leader at Muskingum, was the first-ever Muskie to receive the Jack Rafeld OAC Baseball Player of the Year Award. He is a three-time All-OAC honoree, two-time Academic All-OAC selection and a three-time OAC Baseball Hitter of the Week. In 2009, Whiteman was recognized as Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. He was named d3baseball.com All-American Honorable Mention and Third Team Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-American in 2008. In 2007, Whiteman was honored with the Muskingum William F. Lange Outstanding Freshman Award. Whiteman currently ranks first all-time at Muskingum in hits (211), second in RBIs (161), second in doubles (47), third in triples (9), fourth in at-bats (544), fourth in home runs (30) and fourth in runs scored (135).
Senior women’s basketball guard Emily Hart (Fletcher/Miami East), senior baseball pitcher Ben Skelley (Canton/South), senior men’s soccer midfielder and tennis player Kyle Vallejo (Bethel/Bethel-Tate), senior men’s golfer Erik Nesbit (Lorain/Admiral King), senior men’s golfer Ryan Sopko (Parma/Valley Forge), senior football offensive lineman Steve Emmert (Somerset/Sheridan), senior football safety O.J. Diomedi (St. Clairsville), senior cross country runner and track athlete Ian Hankins (Washington, D.C./Saint Johns College), senior track & field athlete J.P. Rousseau (New Albany), senior track athlete Wayne Young (Washington, D.C./Chelsea School) and senior wrestler Ralph Geesey (Montpelier) were all honored with the Greg Riggar Dedication to Sport Award.
The award is bestowed upon senior student-athletes at Muskingum who show excellence in associated areas of dedication to sport, leadership, and practice habits. The athlete must have participated for all four years of his/her collegiate career, be held in high esteem by his/her fellow teammates and also exhibit the qualities of loyalty and discipline.
