Golf tourney raises funds for scholarship

Judie Perkowski / The New Concord Leader Published:

There is still time to participate in the second annual "Know Your Hole" Golf Tournament at Champions Golf Course in Columbus on Saturday, July 31.

The event, sponsored by the Quincy Conner Foundation, was  spearheaded by Conner's Muskingum University fraternity brothers, Luke Ford and Rob McBurney, in 2009 after the death of their best friend Quincy Conner.

Ford and McBurney wanted to "do something in his honor and to keep his memory alive," especially for his wife, Sarah, their young daughter, Trinity. The tournament is a tribute to Conner and a vehicle for establishing a scholarship fund for nine-year-old Trinity to attend the college of her choice.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to her college fund.

In one year, the tournament has evolved into a major fundraiser with additional support from former major league baseball player and local hometown hero, Kevin Ritz, who will golf and sign autographs.

A shotgun start for the four-person, best ball scramble at 8 a.m. gives golfers a chance for one of the high-end prizes for a hole-in-one: a 2011 Chevy Camaro, a set of Taylormade golf clubs, a home entertainment system or round-trip plane tickets for two to wherever. Golf is $75 and includes drinks and lunch.

Hole sponsorship is available on three levels. First level is a $100 hole sponsor which includes a personalized sign posted on a specific hole, your name on memorial T-shirts and recognized at the awards ceremony; second level is a $500 Gold Sponsor which includes everything in the first level plus entry of a four-person golf team and four tickets to the after hours comedy special; third level is a $1,000 Platinum Sponsor, which includes all of the above plus dinner for four at the charity dinner after golf, and recognized in all publications — including local newspapers — and at the charity dinner.

The Quincy Conner Charity Dinner at the 94th Aero Squadron in Columbus follows the golf outing.

Tickets are $25 per person and includes a comedy act.

Again, all proceeds from the dinner will be donated to Trinity's college fund.

An added incentive is a raffle for a five-day, four-night stay at the Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Mountains in Ashville, N. Car. Only 200 tickets will be sold at $20 each, and will be available at the awards ceremony during the event, or until they are sold out. Winner will be announced at the conclusion of the dinner.

Last year's inaugural event drew more than 100 golfers and raised approximately y$5,000.

Organizers are again planning for a full card for the golf outing and a full house for the dinner, so register early for the tournament, the dinner, raffle tickets, or to become a hole sponsor at the Foundation's Web site, www.quincyconnerfoundation.com.

Also on the site is a map illustrating directions to the golf course and the 94th Aero Squadron.
