The Road Runner Elite 18U Travel Fastpitch Team started the summer season by bringing home the championship in their own John Wells Memorial Tournament last weekend at Riverside Park in Zanesville.
In Pool play, the Road Runner Elite team went 4-0 to receive the top seed, defeating Twisted Sisters, 8-0; Road Runner Rebels, 12-0; Muskie Chix, 3-1; and Hancock Heat, 21-0. In bracket play, they defeated the Rebels ,10-1, and the Muskie Chix, 2-1, to go to the championship game undefeated. The Chix turned the tables by winning the first championship game, 3-0, which forced a second contest in the double-elimination tournament and the Elite brought home the title by defeating the Chix, 12-3.
Jenna Shingary (John Glenn/Kentucky State University) led the team at the plate with a .571 batting average (12-of-21), with 6 RBI, 7 runs scored, a triple and a home run. Jasmin Carlson (International School of Hildersum /Netherlands) hit .533 (8/15), with a double, 7 runs scored and 5 RBI; Tori Gast (River View) hit .375 (6/20), with a double, 7 runs scored and 4 RBI; Kalyn Hanby (Tri-Valley) hit .467 (7/15) with a double, triple, 5 runs scored, and 3 RBI; Taylor Spang (River View) went 4-1 on the mound with a 1.33 ERA and a whopping 42 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched and she also batted .357 (5/14), with a home run, 5 runs scored and 4 RBI.
Kristin Prokopakis (Edison) batted .500 with a double, triple, 6 runs scored, a team-leading and 8 RBI; twin sister Kayla Prokopakis, hit .471 (8/17) with a home run, 7 runs scored and 6 RBI. Ashley Starr (Indian Creek) had 2 runs scored and 2 RBI and also a perfect 0.00 E.R.A with 6 strikeouts in 8 innings on the mound.
Three players from Notre Dame Cathedral Latin contributed to the team’s run to the championship — Dani Ramos hit .476 with a double, 9 runs scored, and 3 RBI; Erin Ruff had 4 RBI, 4 runs scored and a home run; and Alex Cribari hit .300 with a double, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI.
Lauren Ketchum (Lisbon David Anderson) missed most of the weekend due to her sister’s wedding, but came back to pitch the final championship game, giving up 1 earned run in 5 innings to get the win.
The team is competing this weekend at the Rumble on the River, a USA/ASA “A” National Qualifier in Zanesville.
